ESPN Names Former Raider as Steelers Replacement for Cam Sutton

The Pittsburgh Steelers could find a new veteran cornerback in free agency.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have one name at the top of their fans' free agency list and it's Cam Sutton. The veteran cornerback has high expectations to return to the team for his seventh season, but if he doesn't, there's another available player who could fit as a replacement.

ESPN named one player for each team as their "best fit" in free agency. For the Steelers, ESPN staff writer Matt Bowen named former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback, Rock Ya-Sin.

"How strong the market for Ya-Sin ends up being will play a role in the Steelers’ ability to make a move, but I like the fit — especially if Pittsburgh can’t re-sign Sutton," Bowen writes. "Ya-Sin is well-versed in both man and zone schemes and has a physical approach to the game, so he would upgrade the perimeter of the Steelers’ secondary. He had seven pass breakups this season and allowed just one touchdown receptions as the nearest defender, according to NFL Next Gen Stats."

Ya-Sin will enter his fifth NFL season, spending three years with the Indianapolis Colts before playing 11 games for the Raiders this past season. In 52 games, including 38 starts, the former second-round pick has two interceptions and 27 pass deflections.

Sutton, on the other hand, recorded three interceptions and 15 pass deflections this past season, and has five INTs and 21 pass deflections in the last two years.

The Steelers did have interest in Ya-Sin coming out of college back in 2019. Pittsburgh met with the Temple prospect multiple times during the draft process, including bringing him in for a pre-draft visit.

Still, the expectation that Sutton returns should be high, and with Levi Wallace still on the roster, Pittsburgh might avoid free agency and try to add corner depth in the NFL Draft.
