Former Steelers Pushing Byron Leftwich as Next OC

Former Pittsburgh Steelers players know who they want the team to replace Matt Canada with.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have an opening at offensive coordinator after the team announced the firing of Matt Canada. For now, they have two in-house coaches set to replace him, but some former players are making a pitch for an ex-player to get the job.

Moving forward, the Steelers will work with quarterback coach Mike Sullivan and running back coach Eddie Faulkner as their interim offensive coordinator duo. But after the season, the expectation is that the team will look for outside hires to replace Canada in 2024.

Former Steelers Willie Colon and Plaxico Burress have the same train of thought when it comes to replacing Canada.

"Call up Byron Leftwich."

During an appearance on the Carton Show, the two former players gave their pitch as to why Leftwich should be the Steelers' hire.

"Byron Leftwich has been out there. He should be the next guy in line," Colon said. "He knows what it takes. He knows what it looks like…he knows how to appeal to a locker room."

"I believe it is B Left," Burress said, agreeing with Colon. "There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be an offensive coordinator in the league anyway."

Before the news of Canada's firing broke, former quarterback Ben Roethlisberger made his pitch for Leftwich as well.

"I would love to see Byron Leftwich come in here and be the OC," Roethlisberger said during his podcast Footbahlin'. "He was there. He played under Coach [Mike Tomlin]. He understands what it means to be a Steeler. I think he's a great OC."

Reports claim Leftwich has reached out to the Steelers to help as an offensive consultant, but at the time, Pittsburgh was not answering the calls. With the firing of Canada, it'll be interesting to see if their tone changes.
