New Candidate Arises for Steelers Offensive Assistant Search

Another quarterback specialist could be the perfect fit for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers decided they're keeping Matt Canada for at least the 2023 season, but they also made it known they're open to more coaching additions this offseason. And the latest name to circulate through the team is former Houston Texans offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton.

Hamilton was let go from the Texans' coaching staff after the team hired new head coach DeMeco Ryans. While Houston turns to Bobby Slowik to lead their offense, Hamilton will look for a new home in the NFL, and the Steelers might have a place for him.

Team president Art Rooney II was asked during his end-of-the-year media session whether or not he'd be open to bringing on a Brian Flores-like coach for the offense. After the team saw great success with Flores spending the year as the senior defensive assistant, Rooney said he'd be open to a number of coaching changes before the season.

The first name to float around after that conversation was former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. Now, it appears Hamilton could enter that race as well.

Hamilton's resume screams for the Steelers in certain aspects. The former quarterbacks coach has trained some very noticeable names such as Andrew Luck and Justin Herbert, and at one point, had many believing in Davis Mills.

Hamilton was Luck's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Stanford and in Indianapolis. He's been working at both the college and pro levels as an offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator since 1997.

The Steelers could certainly use a qualified quarterback trainer to work with Kenny Pickett. Mike Sullivan isn't going anywhere, and Canada will remain the go-to for the offense, but having a third hand in the pile seems like a move Pittsburgh is open to, especially after the success Flores had.

Plus, the team is entering the final year of Canada's contract, and while they're sticking with him in 2023, they could go a different direction in 2024.

With a candidate already on the staff, it makes that transition much easier for the Steelers.

There is currently no link between the Steelers and Hamilton as he enters the coaching market. But as the offseason rolls, expect Pittsburgh to begin doing their homework on potential hires for that unusual offensive assistant role.

Hamilton could be on that list.
