Steelers Very Excited About Possibility of Trading 32nd Pick

The Pittsburgh Steelers expect plenty of action with the 32nd pick.

PITTSBURGH -- Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan took the podium to discuss the Pittsburgh Steelers 2023 NFL Draft outlook, and in a midst of questions and answers about certain positions, offseason acquisitions and much more, the 32nd pick stood out as the hot topic amongst those front office.

"That 32nd position is something that's new to us, and that's something that's probably going to have more of our attention and the spontaneity of it or the uniqueness of it," Tomlin said. "It's just due diligence in terms of preparing for the things that could happen at 17, whether we stay there, move up, move back. That's every year business for us."

The Steelers have reportedly spoken to two teams about moving up in the first round, the Tennessee Titans (No. 11) and Chicago Bears (No. 9). Khan acknowledged that by the time the draft starts, they will have spoken to all 31 other teams about the possibility of trading. But 32 appears to be one they'll wait on.

"Being in that position, we're acknowledging that we're not quarterback shopping, and that position might be one that attracts quarterback shoppers," Tomlin said. "So, it's exciting to see what transpires with some of those phone calls and the value that we're able to get. It is a unique position for us to be in, and we are very excited about it."

The Steelers don't believe they have a "position of need" heading into the NFL Draft, which allows them to operate without being influenced to reach for any one player.

Without a position of need and another pick at 49, the Steelers are fully anticipating some action when Day 1 is over, and they're on the clock at pick 32.

"We're excited about it," Tomlin said. "We've been talking about. The thing we're least familiar with about it is the amount of calls that we will be getting. That's what we've spent our time talking about is how do we organize and how do we get prepared for the receiving of the amount of interest that that pick could have."
