Steelers Named Landing Spot for Former Bengals Star

The Pittsburgh Steelers could be adding another big-name defender.

PITTSBURGH -- Could the Pittsburgh Steelers add another edge rusher to their roster before the start of the season? Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox believes there's a "bargain free agent" the team should be calling before he signs elsewhere.

Knox believes former Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Carlos Dunlap makes the perfect fit as a late-summer signing before the regular season.

"The Steelers have a very good pass-rushing duo in T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. Watt was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, and when he missed time with a torn pectoral in 2022, Highsmith exploded with a 14.5-sack season," Knox writes.

"However, the Steelers should be eyeing the playoffs this year, and a playoff team cannot have too many pass-rushers. Bringing in a veteran like Carlos Dunlap would only make Pittsburgh's defense that much more formidable."

Dunlap, 34, is coming off a four-sack season with 20 quarterback pressures. He remains a free agent, and is waiting for an opportunity to sign with a team he believes is a contender.

"I can help another team get one of their own or help the Chiefs again," Dunlap told Forbes. "The Chiefs haven't ruled that out, but currently, it's a waiting game."

The Steelers do have plenty of hype around them this season, and could be viewed as a sneaky contender heading into the season.

Currently, Pittsburgh is working with Markus Golden and rookie Nick Herbig as their backups behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. Golden enters his ninth season coming off just a 2.5-sack year with the Arizona Cardinals.

Herbig is a fourth-round rookie, but he's impressed throughout training camp. With expectations high for his first preseason game, the Steelers could see whether or not they'll need more depth at the position by the time they return from Tampa Bay.
