Steelers New OL Nate Herbig Has Raving Reviews

The Pittsburgh Steelers might have landed a steal in free agency.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers made a move on their offensive line, inking former Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets guard Nate Herbig to a two-year, $8 million deal.

The former undrafted free agent has 28 starts under his belt in the NFL, 11 with the Jets and 17 with the Eagles. He now rejoins assistant general manager Andy Weidl in Pittsburgh, and the reviews of the Steelers' newest big man are promising.

Trench Warfare analyst Brandon Thorn had Herbig as the 14th-best offensive lineman in free agency and believes he's a starter-quality blocker.

"Herbig brings a stout, wide-bodied frame with a quick anchor and consistent physicality in the run game to wear on defenders," Thorn writes. "He had some eye-catching impact blocks in the Jets zone-based run scheme in 2022 and is just 25-years old with potential to compete for and win a starting job at guard."

Immediately following the news, the Pat McAfee Show brought their offensive line analyst and former NFL big man A.Q. Shipley in for his reaction.

"Herbig is a monster," Shipley said, comparing him to former Steelers linemen such as Chris Kemoeatu and Willie Colon.

The Steelers had Kevin Dotson as their season-opener starter the last two seasons, but adding Herbig makes things interesting. At minimum, the signing offers the Steelers interior depth that they lacked last season, and could allow them to move on from former third-round pick Kendrick Green.

But if their plan is to see which guard is the best at training camp, it'll be fun to watch Dotson and Herbig battle it out for the left guard spot.
