Steelers Pull Off the Impossible

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a chance to improve, not to do what they've done.

PITTSBURGH -- These are not your father's Pittsburgh Steelers.

What general manager Omar Khan has done this offseason alone should clear any worry from fans about whether or not he was the right choice of hire. Remember when everyone was split on deciding between him and scout Brandon Hunt as the next GM? Looks like Art Rooney II made the right call.

Not everything is going to work out, either. Khan will make moves that don't result in great success, but it doesn't really matter. From what we've seen to this point, those mistakes won't come at a high price, and therefore, there is no high risk.

Now, let's talk about the quarterback room.

The Steelers went from Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph to, well, this. One year ago Pickett was set to lead this team to wherever his ceiling would take them. That ceiling was just outside of the playoffs with Rudolph needing to come in and close the deal.

One month ago, the belief was that Pickett and Rudolph would compete for the starting job, and the winner would see if the Steelers could be contenders with them running the offense. Chances were that they wouldn't be, but maybe, they would win a playoff game.

Today, it's Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, and for everyone who held out hope for a late-round quarterback in the NFL Draft, you'll likely get your wish.

The turnaround is insane. If someone did not pay attention to football for three weeks and you told them what just happened in the matter of one week, they'd never believe you. But it happened.

Worst case scenario, the Steelers have two viable options with some upside, who, for whatever reason, don't work out. The best case scenario is the Steelers get Wilson back to his Pro Bowl former, and they compete for a Super Bowl, all while Fields learns and grows behind him. Then, they get a second star in Fields a year or two from now.

This is the first time Fields will have a top-tier running game or any sort of offensive line success. It's the first time he has a mentor in front of him and a coaching staff that is going to be reliable.

Who knows how this turns out, but the chances of it working seem much higher than those of it failing.

Frankly, the Steelers pulled off what seemed impossible. Everyone talked about how the price tag for Fields was going to be too high, that Wilson was a pipe dream, that it was going to be Rudolph and Pickett, and that the bar would remain just about where it was a year ago.

It all happened - and it only cost the Steelers $1.2 million and a 2025 sixth-round pick.

As of right now, the Steelers are back. And the most important thing to remember is that this is just Omar Khan's second offseason.
