Former Steelers DB Terrell Edmunds Needs Health to Earn Bigger Payday With Eagles

The former Pittsburgh Steelers safety is banking on his availability to earn him some big time incentives with the Philadelphia Eagles.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will look to replace safety Terrell Edmunds after the former first-round pick signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Signing another one-year deal didn't come as a surprise after the safety market continued to stay low in free agency. Edmunds has been searching for a long-term deal the last two offseasons, but has seemingly run into free agency where his position has had little demand.

But his deal with Philly did come with some surprise. According to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson, Edmunds' contract is worth more than $2 million, but the base salary doesn't exceed his deal with the Steelers from a year ago. However, the incentives could lead to a slightly bigger payday.

Edmunds signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Steelers last offseason. This year, if he plays each of the Eagles' 17 games, he can earn an extra $379,411 and has $850,000 in total incentives.

At the base, Edmunds' deal leaves questions about why he left the Steelers. Once you see the incentives, though, it's easy to see why a player who has played all but three games since his rookie season would take an availability-driven contract.

If Edmunds meets all the demands of his one-year deal, he'll earn more than he did in Pittsburgh a year ago. If he doesn't, it would be interesting to know if the Steelers offered a deal with slightly more money.
