Steelers Want Allen Robinson Back Under One Condition
PITTSBURGH -- After leaving the NFL Combine, the Pittsburgh Steelers all of a sudden appear to be a team that's looking for upgrades to their wide receivers corps and changes could be coming to that position soon.
The Steelers met with many of the top wideouts in a draft stacked at that position during the NFL Combine last week, which could be a hint that they are preparing to move on from starting slot receiver, Allen Robinson. According to a report from Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the Steelers are interested in keeping him but only for the right price.
"Allen Robinson is a potential cut candidate due to his cap number exceeding $10 million, but the Pittsburgh Steelers would prefer to retain him at a reduced salary," Meirov wrote. "Team officials met with Robinson’s representation in Indianapolis."
Robinson brought the final two years of a $46,500,000 contract with him when the Steelers traded for him and a seventh round pick in exchange for their own seventh round pick. Robinson stands to count for $11,917,500 against the salary cap next season but there is a potential out this offseason that would save the Steelers dead cap money should they release Robinson.
The Steelers must value his veteran presence but following a season where Robinson accounted for just 34 receptions, 280 yards and no touchdowns, they'd prefer the extra cap space to pursue some upgrades either at receiver or elsewhere on the roster.
Pittsburgh could also look to save some money and free up a spot to bring in some new blood either through the draft or free agency if they offload Diontae Johnson in a trade, Meirov said.
The Steelers wide receivers room appears to be in flux during a pivotal offseason in Pittsburgh.
