Source: Steelers View Russell Wilson as Backup

The Pittsburgh Steelers, while interested in Russell Wilson, are still all-in on Kenny Pickett.

PITTSBURGH -- As free agency approaches, The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to meet with free agent quarterback Russell Wilson about a potential signing. The two sides have some mutual interest in a deal, but nothing is imminent as of now.

According to league sources, there is a "40 to 45%" chance a deal gets done as of now. Nothing is set in stone, and there is still progress to be made before the two sides feel they've come to an agreement.

With Wilson being released by the Denver Broncos but carrying his $85 million dead cap, he'll continue to be paid by the Broncos in 2024, earning over $37 million. Therefore, there is a belief he will be open to signing a deal under $2 million.

It is important to note that Wilson would not be signing as a starter. Instead, he is viewed as a backup to Kenny Pickett, whom the Steelers continue to have full confidence in. The addition of Wilson comes in twofold — as a veteran mentor and as a reliable backup if Pickett were unable to play.

A league source says the Steelers view Wilson as a fit for who they are as an organization and would be the perfect match to help guide Pickett in his third season. During his time in Denver, he was beloved by his teammates, and Pittsburgh has an interest in having him help build a strong culture within their offense.

While the team expects Pickett to take a leap forward this season, they would like a contingency plan that can carry them as far as the roster around the quarterback position could. The Steelers believe that, if needed, Wilson could lead them to the postseason.

The signing of Wilson would not rule out a return for Mason Rudolph. The Steelers typically carry three quarterbacks on their roster and plan to do so again in 2024.

A decision on signing or going elsewhere will come soon enough, but for now, the two sides have plenty to discuss during their initial meeting, which is expected to happen prior to the beginning of free agency.
