PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers could land the best free agent cornerback available this offseason as they look to boost a depleted secondary.

Pro Football Focus named the Steelers as one of four potential landing spots for free agent cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, whose rookie contract with Kansas City will expire at the end of this season. PFF has Pittsburgh and the Chiefs as contenders for Sneed alongside the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles.

In 16 regular season games played, Sneed set a career-high in passes defended with 14 and recorded two interceptions and 78 total tackles. He's picked off multiple passes in each of his four seasons in the NFL. He led a Chiefs secondary that ranked fourth in passing yards and touchdowns allowed during the 2023 season.

OverTheCap.com estimates his next contract will be worth $14,969,000 annually, which would put him in the same stratosphere as players like Darius Slay, Tre'Davius White and J.C. Jackson in terms of compensation. The Steelers have $15,661,486 in cap space as of right now.

The Steelers drafted a starting-caliber corner in Joey Porter Jr. last spring but the state of the rest of the cornerbacks group is up in the air. Levi Wallace, Chandon Sullivan and James Pierre are all free agents this offseason. Patrick Peterson moved to safety for part of the 2023 campaign and played well, leading some to believe a position change could lengthen his career. Pittsburgh will also get 2023 seventh-round pick Corey Trice back from a knee injury that kept him sidelined for the entire season.
