Texans Signing Case Keenum: Top 10 Free Agency QB Move?

With the impending draft selection of their next franchise quarterback, the Texans were smart to sign Case Keenum this offseason.

When the Houston Texans find themselves on the clock with the second overall pick in next month's NFL draft, they do so with the ability to select their next franchise quarterback.

Whether that ends up being Ohio State's C.J. Stroud, Alabama's Bryce Young, or even Florida's Anthony Richardson, though, is still to be seen. However, regardless of who they draft the Texans knew it would be smart to add a veteran backup at the position.

To fill that role Houston went out this offseason and signed Case Keenum to a two-year contract - a move that CBS Sports believes was the 10th-best quarterback move.

No. 10 - Case Keenum to the Texans

Full contract: Two years, $6.25 million

It's a backup match made in heaven: A Texas native now on his third stint with the team, Keenum is an underrated off-script mentor whose experience in all kinds of systems -- he's started for six different clubs -- should be instrumental to whichever top prospect Houston selects early in April's draft.

In an ideal world, the Texans would only need Keenum to see the field in garbage time or if a playoff berth has been clinched, but ultimately that may not be the case. Injuries and other unforeseen circumstances can happen which makes a reliable backup a must-have.

Keenum has shown an ability to step up and deliver when asked, most notably in the 2017 season when he threw for 3,457 yards with 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 15 games following an injury to Sam Bradford.

Ultimately, Keenum came to Houston knowing he would serve as the backup for a rookie quarterback and help him learn the ropes. His track record of filling in as a starter, though, makes the deal that much better for the Texans.
