Dameon vs. Devin: Texans Should Split Running Back Job?

Ahead of the Texans' third and final preseason game, there will be reason to watch their running back room — the unit that has struggled so far — to see how it continues to develop with a hindered offensive line.

Despite taking a preseason victory in Game 1 against the New England Patriots, DeMeco Ryans and the Houston Texans have had a noticeably hard time running the ball.

In two games, Houston has combined for just 121 rushing yards while utilizing nine different running backs — starters included. The lack of offensive production from the backfield was a big reason for the Texans' struggle against the Miami Dolphins, who rushed for over 200 yards in Game 2.

So, with a plethora of options in the backfield with a hindered offensive line, Houston will certainly be looking to find a solution to complement the passing game, but who is going to be the back to step up, and how many of the carries will he get?

"Dameon Pierce showcased bruising energy before his rookie season ended due to injury," CBS Sports wrote in a running-back room analysis of all 32 NFL teams. "He's got bell-cow skills, but should also forfeit touches to ex-Bills starter Devin Singletary, who's topped 950 scrimmage yards in each of his four seasons."

The site placed the Texans in the 70-30 category regarding running back rotation. Pierce would be taking a majority of the snaps, while a veteran Singletary would provide backup reps at a higher level than most league backups.

That strategy is certainly feasible, especially given how well Pierce performed last season. He earned the NFL's Angry Run of the Year award on top of nearly going for 1,000 yards while dealing with an injury, and will undoubtedly be returning with a chip on his shoulder.

Singletary has more experience in the league than his second-year teammate, but will need time to adjust to a new system under DeMeco Ryans, which would justify a lesser snap count for him compared to Pierce, but then again, that number will likely be fluid throughout the season depending on performance.

Either way, the Texans are aware of their rushing struggle, and will look to find a rhythm before the start of the regular season — and whoever ends up stepping up will end up being the face of that effort. Luckily, Houston isn't short staffed for options.

The Texans' final preseason game against the New Orleans Saints will take place on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CST.
