The surprising Texans host the struggling Cardinals on Sunday at NRG Stadium, as quarterback phenom C.J. Stroud continues to impress in his first season at the helm in Houston.

The duo of Stroud and first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans has the Texans in the playoff hunt for the first time since 2019 when a pair named O'Brien and Watson were leading the team. A win on Sunday will give the Texans their first three-game winning streak since 2018.

“We’re excited about what our guys have done here to create the energy and the buzz around the city,” Ryans said. “I think our fans here in Houston deserve it ... and we’re just excited to continue to go out another week and just go play good football. I think if we continue to play good football, the city will continue to be excited.”

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud (7) hands the ball off to running back Devin Singletary (26) in the first half against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium.

Houston has won five of its last seven after starting the season 0-2 and is just one game behind Jacksonville for the AFC South lead.

Stroud continues to rewrite the rookie record books after throwing for 470 yards with five touchdowns against the Bucs, then passing for 356. yards last week to become the first rookie in NFL history to throw for at least 350 yards in consecutive games.

“I just want more,” Stroud said. “I want to do better. I want to be as complete as I can. This game is a process, and I know every week I have to bring it. And I know I’m not being treated as a rookie anymore, so people are bringing their A-game because they want to knock me off.”

Last week the Cardinals halted a six-game losing streak, aided by the return of quarterback Kyler Murray from an ACL tear suffered last season. And Stroud has impressed Murray.

“If you love the game, if you really love the art and the detail of the position — he’s playing it the right way,” said Murray, the first overall pick in 2019. “He’s obviously leading those guys. They believe in him, and they trust him so I’m proud of him. I’m excited to see his career.”
