With the 2023 season in the books, Inside the Vikings will be taking a look at all 22 of Minnesota's pending unrestricted free agents over the next couple weeks. We'll examine their past and speculate about their future, particularly the likelihood that they could be re-signed by the Vikings this offseason. We'll start from the least important (Hakeem Adeniji) and work our way up to the big fish (Kirk Cousins).

Vikings UFA profile: TE Johnny Mundt

  • Age: 29
  • 2023 stats: 17 catches, 172 yards, 1 TD
  • 2023 contract AAV: $1.207 million

During his first season with the Vikings in 2022, ex-Ram Johnny Mundt set career highs across the board. Working as the Vikings' TE2 — first behind Irv Smith Jr., then T.J. Hockenson — Mundt played 445 offensive snaps, nearly doubling his career total up to that point. He also caught 19 passes for 140 yards and his first NFL touchdown.

In 2023, the Vikings extended Hockenson long-term and signed elite blocking TE Josh Oliver to a three-year deal. Mundt settled into the TE3 role and didn't have much of a role on offense until Hockenson's knee injury in Week 16. Over the final three games of the season, Mundt played 118 offensive snaps and caught ten passes for 120 yards and a TD. A good athlete at 6'4", he was able to adequately fill Hockenson's role as the Vikings' primary receiving TE.

Mundt also played at least ten special teams snaps in all 17 games in 2023, which adds to his value heading into free agency. He could return to Minnesota and begin the season with a big role, considering Hockenson just underwent ACL surgery this week and is unlikely to be ready for Week 1. It's also possible Mundt goes somewhere where he thinks he can be a true TE2 again, which could leave the Vikings to lean on Nick Muse.
