The Vikings have agreed to terms to re-sign No. 3 tight end Johnny Mundt, the team announced on Friday.

It's a one-year deal worth $2.5 million, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

They've now retained Mundt and fourth-string TE Nick Muse this week, meaning they'll run it back with the same tight end room in 2024. That's important because Mundt (and possibly Muse) could be called upon for major playing time early in the season while T.J. Hockenson — who just had ACL repair surgery in late January — is out. Blocking specialist Josh Oliver will also have a significant role all season long.

Mundt set a career high with 172 receiving yards last season. 120 of those yards — and the second touchdown of his career — came in the final three games of the season after Hockenson's injury thrust him into a bigger role. He finished the year having played 225 offensive snaps and 208 snaps on special teams.

In 2022, before the Oliver addition, Mundt was the Vikings' TE2 behind Irv Smith Jr. and then Hockenson, who was a deadline acquisition when Smith got hurt. He played 445 offensive snaps that season, which was by far the most of his career, and caught 19 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown.

Originally signed by the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon in 2017, Mundt spent the first five years of his career in LA before following Kevin O'Connell and Wes Phillips to Minnesota two years ago. At 6'4", 233 pounds, he's a solid blocker with some receiving ability. Last year, O'Connell called him the best No. 3 tight end in the NFL.

Mundt turns 30 in November.
