NHL Playoffs: Second Round Highlights
Rangers vs. Penguins
The Broadway Blueshirts hoped their veteran-led lineup and the distraction factor of notorious agitator Sean Avery (16) would be enough to upset the promising young Penguins. Unfortunately for New York, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury (2-0 shutout in Game 2) continued to show why Pittsburgh chose him first overall in 2003. Avery ended up in the hospital with a lacerated spleen suffered in Game 5.
Rangers vs. Penguins
Playing with surprising fire in what will likely be his New York swan song, Jaromir Jagr scored three goals and seven points in the series, and gave Sidney Crosby forceful verbal reminders to "just play hockey" when he felt the Penguins star was embellishing and diving to draw penalties.
Rangers vs. Penguins
Acquired by the Penguins at the February trade deadline for his firepower, winger Marian Hossa delivered by scoring two goals, including the series-winner at 7:10 of overtime, in Game 5.
Flyers vs. Canadiens
In a move that will surely be discussed in Montreal for years to come, the Canadiens entrusted their playoff hopes to 20-year old rookie Carey Price. After weathering a seven-game first round against Boston and winning Game 1 against the Flyers, Price unraveled and found himself on the bench for Game 4, which favored Montreal also lost.
Flyers vs. Canadiens
The worst team in the NHL during the 2006-07 season, the Flyers continued their remarkable turnaround by upsetting the Canadiens in five games, with journeyman goaltender Martin Biron (8-4, 2.72 GAA) continuing to shine in the first postseason of his career.
Flyers vs. Canadiens
Center R.J. Umberger was a surprise star for Philadelphia, scoring eight goals in the series. He potted two of them, and tacked on an assist, in the Flyers' series-clinching Game 5 win in Montreal.
Avalanche vs. Red Wings
Top-seeded Detroit buried the battered Avalanche in four games, ending their hope of rekindling the Stanley Cup magic that Peter Forsberg once brought to Colorado. Forsberg, who signed with the Avs in late February, was limited to one game against Detroit by a groin injury and may likely retire. Colorado also lost Ryan Smyth, Paul Stastny and Wojtek Wolski for parts of the series.
Avalanche vs. Red Wings
Center Johan Franzen emerged as Detroit's most potent weapon, scoring hat tricks in Games 1 and 4. By the end of the series, Franzen had nine goals, surpassing Gordie Howe's franchise mark for most tallies in one postseason series.
Avalanche vs. Red Wings
By the end of the series, speculation was high that future Hall of Famer Joe Sakic would retire after 19 seasons with the franchise. Sakic had four assists in the series.
Stars vs. Sharks
Emphatically shedding his playoff choker label, Stars goaltender Marty Turco was masterful as Dallas jumped out to a three-games-to-none lead on the Stanley Cup favorites and hung on for the upset. Turco set a franchise record of 61 saves in Game 6.
Stars vs. Sharks
Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov made what might have been the most amazing save of the postseason when he robbed Brad Richards on a point blank shot in the first overtime of Game 6. Nabokov gloved the puck just as it reached the goal line.
Stars vs. Sharks
As cold down the stretch as the Sharks were hot, the Stars completed a surprising turnaround by ousting San Jose in a four-overtime thriller in Game 6. Stars captain Brendan Morrow scored the series-winner at time 9:03.
