Hudler leads Flames past Devils in SO

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) There is no quit in the Calgary Flames.

Curtis Glencross had two goals twice and Jiri Hudler scored late in regulation to start Calgary's comeback and then got the deciding score in the shootout to give the Flames a 5-4 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night.

Down 4-2, Flames coach Bob Hartley pulled goalie Karri Ramo with 3:33 remaining in regulation. It worked, as Hudler scored from the side of the net with 2:22 left to pull Calgary within one.

Ramo returned to the net briefly before heading to the bench again and, Glencross tied the score with his second goal of the game with 5 seconds left.

''Never mind the grey hair, I'll have to get my heart checked,'' Flames head coach Bob Hartley said. ''I don't know how they do it but we found a way again. We're not making it easy but we're making it interesting.''

In the shootout, both teams scored once in the first three shooters before Hudler sent a shot past Devils goalie Scott Clemmensen to put Calgary ahead. Ramo clinched the victory by stopping Travis Zajac.

The Flames improved to 5-6-0 when trailing after two periods. The five victories lead the NHL, two more than anybody else. Last year the Flames were 4-27-2 facing that scenario.

''That's a fun third period to play,'' Glencross said. ''You don't want to be down a couple goals like that going into the third, but we did a great job in the third period. We got lots of shots, lots of traffic in front of the net and finally capitalized on our opportunities.''

The last time the Flames won when trailing by two or more goals in the final 3 minutes was March 13, 1999. It is also the first time in team history Calgary has scored two goals with the goalie pulled for an extra attacker.

Expected to challenge for the team lead in goals this season, Glencross entered the night with just two on the season and just one in his last 18 games.

''Definitely some relief,'' said the 31-year-old Glencross, who will be an unrestricted free agent after the season. ''Everyone could have seen it. I think even more relief after the second one.

''It's been a rough little go, usually I have more goals than assists but it's the complete opposite. ... It doesn't really matter, we're putting up two points and look at us in the standings. We're in a good spot and have to keep moving forward.''

Josh Jooris also scored and Ramo had 25 saves for Calgary, which finished 4-1 on a five-game homestand and is second in the Pacific Division - one point behind Anaheim.

Adam Henrique, Mike Cammalleri, Zajac and Tuomo Ruutu scored for New Jersey, which is 1-1-1 on a four-game trip that concludes Tuesday at Vancouver.

''That's no good,'' Cammalleri said. ''They obviously did a good job. They kept coming. We've got to counter a bit better there at the end. Tough one.''

Clemmensen made his first start of the season after Cory Schneider started each of New Jersey's first 20 games. Clemmensen, a 37-year-old longtime backup, had 33 saves through overtime.

Calgary trailed 3-1 entering the third period and pulled within one on Jooris' power-play goal at 2:26. It was the 24-year-old rookie's fifth score of the season.

However, Ruutu restored the Devils' two-goal cushion about 8 minutes later. He sped into the Flames' end and while Ramo got a piece of Ruutu's original shot that rattled off the end boards, the puck came right back out in front and Ruutu calmly flipped the puck over the goalie, who was sprawled on the ice.

Henrique opened the scoring at 4:51 of the first period, scoring his sixth of the season on a pretty setup from Patrick Elias.

Cammalleri made it 2-0 with 6:14 to go in the first when he one-timed a pass from Jaromir Jagr past Ramo.

Calgary pulled to 2-1 a little past the midpoint of the second period when Glencross corralled a loose puck in the slot, spun and whipped a shot past Clemmensen.

Zajac gave the Devils a two-goal lead again with 8 seconds left in the second when Henrique's shot hit the crossbar, hit Ramo in the leg and bounced out to Zajac, who buried his fourth of the season.

Notes: Rookie LW Michael Ferland had an assist on Jooris' goal for his first NHL point. ... Corban Knight made his season debut for the Flames after being called up from Adirondack of the AHL on Friday. ... Calgary RW Devin Setoguchi has gone 26 games without a goal, a streak that dates back to last year with Winnipeg. He has no points in 12 games this season for Calgary.
