Jets win 3-2 in OT, hand Oilers 11th straight loss

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Mathieu Perreault didn't see his winning goal go in the net. The slumping Edmonton Oilers surely felt its sting.

Perreault scored 17 seconds into overtime, and the Winnipeg Jets sent the Edmonton Oilers to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory on Wednesday night.

Perrault tipped Jacob Trouba's point shot past goalie Ben Scrivens to win it.

''I just went to the net,'' Perreault said. ''(Trouba) shoots to the right of my stick, so I just kind of hopefully put my stick there and it went off it.

''I didn't see it going in.''

Trouba had a goal and two assists, and Dustin Byfuglien also scored for the Jets, who began a three-game homestand.

Trouba said he wasn't thinking about avoiding being the team that finally lost to the Oilers.

''Every game is tough in this league. Every team has good players,'' he said. ''I don't think we really looked into the whole losing thing too much.''

Teddy Purcell and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had goals for the Oilers (6-15-5), who haven't beaten a Western Conference opponent this season.

Edmonton's longest winless streak is 14 games from Oct. 11-Nov. 7, 1993. The Oilers' latest skid includes four overtime losses.

Ondrej Pavelec made 22 saves in the win. Scrivens stopped 23 shots.

''Getting a lot of pity points right now, but it doesn't mean a lot if we can't start getting in the win column,'' Scrivens said. ''We've got to find a way to get over that hump. But I thought we were a lot closer to the game we expected out of ourselves tonight and saw a lot of really good things out of our top line and out of our power play, out of our defense.

''So some positives to build off of, but it's still frustrating to not be on the winning side again.''

Purcell had given Edmonton a 2-1 lead at 1:31 of the third period when he capitalized on a Winnipeg turnover. He got around a Jets player and fired a shot that caromed in off the crossbar.

Byfuglien tied it 2-2 with 3:06 left in regulation when he redirected in Mark Stuart's point shot. He also assisted on Trouba's goal.

''You can't move that guy,'' Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said of the 6-foot-5, 260-pound Byfuglien. ''It's impossible. And then when he gets positioned, it's sometimes hard to get his stick. Those tipped goals, they're tough to defend.''

The Oilers had the game's first shot, but it didn't come until 7:30 elapsed in the first period.

The Jets scored on their third shot when Perreault skated into the right circle and sent a pass back to Trouba in the slot for his third goal of the season at 12:33.

Winnipeg has scored first in seven straight games and in 17 of 26 this season. The Jets are 10-4-3 in those 17 first-goal games.

Pavelec was screened on a point shot from Nugent-Hopkins at 17:59 of the first period. The goal was Nugent-Hopkins' sixth of the season and it extended his point streak to three games. Taylor Hall assisted on the goal, giving him three assists in a three-game point streak.

Winnipeg outshot Edmonton 8-7 in the first period.

Scrivens faced a barrage of shots midway through the scoreless second period, and had to whip out his glove for a stop against a drive by Byfuglien.

Eakins said he was concerned his players might feel unlucky after hitting the post twice and then having Pavelec make an outstanding save.

''That game's over if just one of those go in,'' Eakins said. ''It's extremely frustrating not to get the win, but at the same time it's encouraging with how I thought we played a very mature game here on the road.''

NOTES: Byfuglien's assist on Trouba's goal was his 100th franchise point. Oilers RW Jordan Eberle played in his 300th NHL game. ... Jets sophomore C Mark Scheifele played in his 100th NHL game. ... Winnipeg placed top defenseman Tobias Enstrom (lower-body) on the injured list this week. D Grant Clitsome sat out with an undisclosed injury.
