Vancouver Games: Day 4

Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo of China finally won an Olympic gold medal, outscoring teammates Pang Qing and Tong Jian in the figure skating pairs final.

When Shen Xue, 31, and Zhao Hongbo, 36, finished their routine, Zhao knelt to the ice, burying his face in his hands while his wife patted his back. He pumped his fist several times while she beamed, her grin wide and bright. This is their fourth Olympics.

Pang Qing and Tong Jian won Monday's free skate to jump from fourth after the short program to a silver medal.

Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany won a bronze medal in the pairs final after a flawed free skate.

Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig were the highest finishing U.S. pairs team, but their10th place finish made this the country's worst Olympic showing in pairs.

America's most decorated Alpine skier, Bode Miller earned a bronze medal in the downhill on Monday. He finished nine-hundredths of a second behind winner Didier Defago of Switzerland, the smallest margin between gold and bronze in the history of the event, which began in 1948.

Bode Miller's bronze in the downhill was the first U.S. medal in the event since Tommy Moe took gold in 1994 in Lillehammer. The only other American to have won a downhill medal was Bill Johnson, who won gold in 1984.

"It's such a relief to get a medal," Miller said. "The fact that those other guys beat me to the hundredth of a second doesn't bother me."

Injured U.S. skiing hopeful Lindsey Vonn finally made her first training run on Monday, finishing with the fastest time in the field on the upper section of the course. A bumpy afternoon run on the lower section left her hobbling again.

Seth Wescott (right) charged from behind over the final five jumps of snowboard cross for a thrilling victory over Canada's Mike Robertson.

Those who followed the Turin Olympics may recall that Wescott used a deft passing move in the final of those Games to win the first gold ever awarded in snowboard cross.

Nate Holland of the U.S., a five-time Winter X Games champ, spun out early in the final foursome.

Problems with ice-resurfacing machines caused a delay of about an hour during the men's 500 meters.

Mo Tae-bum of South Korea (pictured) won the gold medal in the 500 meters. Keiichiro Nagashima and Joji Kato, both of Japan, won silver and bronze, respectively.

Mo Tae-bum won the biggest race of his life on his 21st birthday.

Switzerland's Dario Cologna collapsed across the finish line after winning the men's 15-kilometer freestyle cross-country race.

Charlotte Kalla (center) of Sweden led from start to finish to win the women's 10-kilometer freestyle race.
