Japan's Kohei Uchimura, the three-time world all-around champion who is considered by many the greatest male gymnast ever, took flight over the field to win his first Olympic all-around gold.
Nathan Adrian of the U.S. put a punch into celebrating his victory -- by one hundredth of a second -- over Australia's James Magnussen in the 100-meter freestyle. The win gave Adrian the first individual Olympic gold of his career.
Qin Kai (top) and Luo Yutong made a point of getting their act together to win the men's sychronized three-meter diving title, giving China its third gold in as many diving finals at London. The U.S. pair of Kristian Ipsen and Troy Dumais took the bronze.
Germany (green hull) pulled ahead to win this final of the men's eights, but Great Britain (second from top) got the bronze on a lusterous day for the hosts at Eton Dorney, where the women's pairs team of Helen Glover and Heather Stanning earlier won Britain's first gold of the Games.
In a men's preliminary round beach volleyball match held on the imported Surrey sands of Horse Guards Parade, Sean Rosenthal went up as he and U.S. partner Jacob Gibb owned Latvia 2-0.
