In his heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Evan Jager of the U.S. (headband) showed he'll be in the hunt for a medal, taking second in 8:16.61, just .38 of a second behind France's Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad (blue shorts).

In the last individual race of his Olympic career, Michael Phelps stromed throught he final length to win the 100-meter butterfly and claim his 17th gold medal. South African Chad Le Clos, who beat Phelps in the 200 butterfly, shared silver with Russian Evgeny Korotyshkin in 51.81.
