Carmelita Jeter of the U.S. opened her campaign for the 100-meter gold in smoking fashion, powering through her heat in 10.83 seconds, the third-fastest time in Olympic history.
Sanya Richards-Ross of the U.S. left the rest of the field in her wake on the way to winning her heat of the 400 meters. The 2008 bronze medalist in the event, Richards-Ross finished in 51.78.
Jessica Ennis of Great Britain took the first-day lead in the heptathlon. The event concludes Saturday with the long jump, javelin and 800.
In his heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Evan Jager of the U.S. (headband) showed he'll be in the hunt for a medal, taking second in 8:16.61, just .38 of a second behind France's Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad (blue shorts).
In the last individual race of his Olympic career, Michael Phelps stromed throught he final length to win the 100-meter butterfly and claim his 17th gold medal. South African Chad Le Clos, who beat Phelps in the 200 butterfly, shared silver with Russian Evgeny Korotyshkin in 51.81.
Missy Franklin of the U.S. got here second individual gold of the Games when she blew away the field in the women's 200-meter backstroke, winning in a world-record 2:04.06.
Roger Federer returns a shot against Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina during the semifinals. Federer won to advance to the final.
Bojana Popovic (17) of Montenegro got the ball off despite the strong-arm tactics of Croatia's Andrea Seric (6) and Andrea Penezic in their Group A preliminary match, won 27-26 by Croatia.
A diving April Ross punched things up at Horse Guards Parade as she and partner Jennifer Kessy gave the U.S. a 2-0 victory over Switzerland in their round-of-16 match.
Viktor Leptikov of Kazakhstan caught plenty of air in his heat of the 400-meter hurdles. He couldn't catch the field, however, finishing eighth and last in 51.67 seconds, as two-time Olympic champion Angelo Taylor of the U.S. won in 49.29.
Belarus cyclists Tatsiana Sharakova, Alena Dylko and Aksana Papko were beside themselves in women's team pursuit qualifying at the Velodrome.
Louise Hazel of Great Britain competes in the 100m hurdles phase of the heptathlon. She finished with a time of 13.48, putting her in 15th place after the first of seven events.
Larry Godfrey of Great Britain, the 10th seed, competes in an elimination round. Godfrey was defeated by Mohamad Khairul Anuar of Malaysia, the fifth seed, by a score of 6-5.
Track and field competition kicked off on Day 7 with the shot put preliminaries.

Amaechi Morton of Nigeria and Roxroy Cato of Jamaica trail Cuba's Amaurys Valle in the 400m hurdles. Valle won the first heat with a time of 49.19.
Jaqueline Ferreira of Brazil celebrates after successfully lifting 230kg during the women's 75kg final. Although it was not enough to medal, it was an achievement for Brazil, which hasn't had a woman Olympic weightlifter since 2000 in Sydney.
American 400m hurdler Michael Tinsley won his heat in 49.13 seconds, just ahead of Jamaican Leford Green. Tinsley qualified tied for fifth to advance to the next round on Saturday, Aug. 4.
Kerron Clement had the second fastest time out of all competitors in the 400m hurdles with a 48.48. Tristan Thomas of Australia finished tied for fifth.
Hyleas Fountain of the U.S. waves to the crowd after placing fourth in the high jump portion of the heptathlon.
Lim Jihye of South Korea. competing in the women's 75kg Weightlifting final, heaved a total of 223kg in the final round.
In the first heat of the 400m hurdles, Amaechi Morton of Nigeria finished in third place-- Kenneth Medwood finished just behind him in fourth.
