Former Jacksonville Jaguars star running back Fred Taylor doesn’t think recently fired head coach Jack Del Rio is fit to be a head coach, according to Yahoo! Sports.
"At the end of the day, [Del Rio]'s not a head coach," Taylor told Yahoo!. "He's a great defensive coach. But he's not a head coach."
Del Rio was fired by parting owner Wayne Weaver Tuesday morning, shortly after the team had lost its eighth game of the season. Weaver had given Del Rio a clear goal that the team would have to make the playoffs in 2011 for him to keep his job. The Jaguars had finished a promising 8-8 in 2010, however with the team earning their eighth loss of the season this weekend, it is not mathematically possible for them to improve upon last year’s finish.
Del Rio, 48, had posted a 68-70 record as Jacksonville’s head coach since joining the team in 2003. In 2002, Del Rio served as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, and he has also spent time as an assistant defensive coach for the Baltimore Ravens and the New Orleans Saints.
