Report: Patriots WR Wes Welker Likely To Be Given Franchise Tag

New England Patriots receiver Wes Welker will likely be given a franchise tag by the New England Patriots, according to the Miami Herald.

"He's going to be tagged, that I know for pretty much certain," Boston Globe reporter Greg Bedard told the Herald in an interview. "If they don't, he's going to sign with the Jets and they're going to have to try and cover him twice a year, or the Dolphins ... They want him back. I don't see why things would change now, but the way it stood before the Super Bowl, they're going to tag him."

Welker caught an NFL leading 122 catches in 2011 for nine touchdowns. Over the past five years, the undersized wide out has hauled in at least 110-or-more catches four times as a member of the Patriots potent passing attack.

The 30-year-old has received criticism over the last week for dropping an important pass in the fourth quarter last weekend’s Super Bowl.
