Barry Sanders wins 'Madden NFL 25' cover vote

Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders won the "Madden NFL 25" cover vote for the popular video game, beating out Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in the final round, EA Sports announced Wednesday night.

Sanders won by getting 58 percent of the more than 700,000 votes cast on the final matchup. Over 40 million votes were cast throughout the entire competition, according to ESPN.com. The game will be in stores August 27.

Sanders beat recently retired Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, as well as fellow Hall of Famers Joe Montana and Jerry Rice for the cover. Peterson is coming off a 2012 season where he ran for 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns, earning the NFL's Most Valuable Player award.

Sanders rushed for 15,269 yards and 99 touchdowns in 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions before retiring after the 1998 season. He is third on the all-time rushing list. Lions receiver Calvin Johnson was on the cover last year.
