Giants sign veteran running back Brandon Jacobs

The New York Giants, in need of running back depth, have reunited with veteran Brandon Jacobs, reports FOX Sports 1's Mike Garafolo on Twitter. Jacobs has signed a one-year deal with the team.

Second-year running back David Wilson was benched Sunday night after fumbling twice in New York's loss to Dallas. Giants coach Tom Coughlin on Monday declined to say whether Wilson would start this week but sounded willing to give him another chance.

“David Wilson is a very talented young man, who we need to be productive,” Coughlin said. “We have been down this road before. We can help him be a better ball carrier, a better secure ball carrier.”

But Wilson's struggles highlighted the team's lack of depth at the position. When Wilson was benched, the team turned to Da'Rel Scott, who had 11 career carries coming into the game.

Last year's starter, Ahmad Bradshaw, signed with the Colts in the offseason. Then, New York lost backup Andre Brown to a broken leg, which will keep him out until Week 10.

The Giants had reportedly already scheduled workouts with veteran backs, but they became more important after the opener. Willis McGahee was reportedly among the expected participants. But New York chose Jacobs, who spent the first seven seasons of his career with the team.
