Report: NFL considering expanding postseason from 12 to 14 teams

The NFL is "urgently discussing" a schedule change that would expand the postseason from 12 to 14 teams while shortening the preseason from four to three games, ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting.

The new system could be put into place as early as the 2014 season if Commissioner Roger Goodell can convince enough owners to vote in favor of the changes, according to Mortensen.

The expanded postseason would allow teams to make up for the revenue they lose with the elimination of a preseason game, and could also lead to additional TV revenue for the league.

The league also would need to establish a new preseason scheduling formula, get sponsorship agreements and resolves a few stadium lease issues, sources said.

The NFL's competition committee recommended the three-game preseason model as the minimum necessary period for player evaluation and development, sources said.
