Rick Renteria reportedly the 'clear-cut favorite' to be Chicago Cubs' manager
After interviewing with the Chicago Cubs on Monday, San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria has emerged as the "clear-cut favorite" to be the the Cubs' next manager, USA Today's Bob Nightengale is reporting.
Renteria, a former MLB infielder (1986-94), has managed several teams in the minor leagues as well as the Mexican national team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He has spent the last six seasons with the Padres, including the last three as their bench coach under Bud Black.
A Mexican American, Renteria fits the bill as a manager who could work well with the large group of young Latino players on the Cubs and in their minor league system, which is reportedly one of the main qualities the organization is looking for in candidates.
Rays bench coach Dave Martinez, Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo and former big league managers A.J. Hinch and Manny Acta are also considered candidates for the position.fired manager Dale Sveum
