New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony left Monday night's game against the Orlando Magic with a sprained left ankle. The team said he will not return.

The injury occurred in the middle of the third quarter, after Anthony committed a foul on the Magic's Nikola Vucevic. J.R. Smith replaced Anthony in the lineup.

The injury throws into question Anthony's status for the Knicks' marquee Christmas Day matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder. So far this season, the 29-year-old Anthony is averaging 26.5 points and nine rebounds per game on 44.5 percent shooting from the field.
