Oscar Pistorius reaches settlement in 2009 alleged assault case

Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee who competed in the 2012 Olympic relay races six months before being charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend last Valentine's Day, reached a settlement on Wednesday in a separate 2009 alleged assault case with another woman, according to a report Wednesday from the Associated Press.

The settlement comes at the direction of Pistorius' attorney, who advised him not to fight civil and criminal legal battles simultaneously, according to the report from Gerald Imray of the AP. Pistorius had been arrested in 2009 after being accused of injuring a woman, Cassidy Taylor-Memmory, during a party at his house when he had allegedly slammed and punched a door.

According to a Pistorius family spokesman cited in the AP report, the decision to reach the settlement has "no bearing" on his murder trial, which begins March 3.

Pistorius had initially responded to the 2009 allegations by launching a $200,000 countersuit against Taylor-Memmory, saying she made up the assault that led to him being arrested for what he believes was no reason. Taylor-Memmory said she reached the deal to drop the case, which included Pistorius paying all of her legal fees, because she was "tired of it weighing me down," according to the report:

"I agreed to it because I was so tired of it weighing me down. It became so difficult at a stage that I needed a bodyguard when I went out in public due to all the hate rants."

According to Imray, the 27-year-old Pistorius is seeking another out-of-court settlement with the family of his late girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, before the murder trial begins in three weeks.
