Galaxy's Gullit slams dull Chelsea

Los Angeles Galaxy head coach and former Chelsea and Newcastle boss Ruud Gullit is sure that Chelsea's dull style of play forced the Stamford Bridge hierarchy to remove José Mourinho from his role as manager.

The legendary Dutchman legend won the FA Cup in 1997 as a young boss, famously calling for "sexy football" in the Premiership. Gullit believes that Roman Abramovich craves similarly attractive soccer, leading the Russian billionaire to replace Mourinho with Avram Grant.

"The board is not very happy with the style of football -- that's why they sacked José Mourinho," Gullit said. "They hope they're going to play better now and if you can find the balance between playing well and winning points, you'll have a good team. I like watching some of the games, not all of them. It's different from my era."

He conceded, though, that sometimes a team is forced to win ugly.

"Arsenal play some of the best football you'll see," he said. "But they are dropping points all of a sudden. So playing attractive football is not always important. Sometimes you need to play for the points."

The MLS season starts on March 29. Gullit will manage England star David Beckham, but hinted that Becks won't get special treatment.

"It's not just about the fitness of David Beckham -- it's about the whole team. You need to do a lot of running and play a lot of games," he said.

Gullit also admitted that he had to think long and hard about taking the MLS job.

"It was a tough decision because the best football is played in Europe," he revealed. "But moving to L.A. Galaxy is a great experience for me. I think America wants to change. Arsène Wenger coached in Japan before he came to the Premier League so it's the experience that's important to me.

"The change the MLS wants to make to their football was also significant and I want to be part of that."
