After Spain spent much of the day with the possession advantage but unable to break through, David Villa scored his fourth goal of the World Cup in the match's 63rd minute. Taking a pass from Xavi Hernandez, Villa was stoned by Portuguese goalkeeper Eduardo on his original shot. But he fired the rebound high into the goal.

Spain dominated possession throughout the match, holding the ball for 65 percent of the day. The possession advantage led to increased pressure on the Portuguese and allowed the Spaniards to get eight clean shots on goal.

Villa sprinted to the corner after his goal, jubilant and sensing that it might be the goal to put Spain through to the quarterfinals. He slid on his knees and let out a yell while his teammates mobbed him to celebrate.

With abundant hoopla surrounding him coming into the tournament, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo again failed to deliver on the biggest of stages. He was rendered ineffective for most of the match against Spain, and his only goal of the World Cup came late in a 7-0 rout against North Korea in the group stage.

Hugo Almeida had one of Portugal's best chances of the match, just missing connecting on a header off a cross from Raul Meireles while Spain's goalkeeper Iker Casillas attempted to punch the ball away.

Lining up to watch their World Cup fate, Paraguay players exhaled jubilantly after a goal in the penalty kick round of their match against Japan. Paraguay's players could celebrate every time -- each of its five penalty kicks found the back of the net.

Paraguay's Lucas Barrios slides in celebration of his made penalty kick, which gave his squad a 2-1 lead in penalties at the time. Barrios finally converted here, after having two shots on goal turned away during the match.
