BRIGHTON, England (AP) -- Former Uruguay international Gus Poyet found out while working as a Confederations Cup pundit for the BBC that he has been fired as manager of English second-tier team Brighton.

Poyet was handed a Brighton statement off-air by production staff at the BBC during Sunday's group-stage match between Nigeria and Spain.

The ex-Chelsea midfielder says "I think the BBC got a great story forever really because a manager getting the information that he's been released from his employment during the time of a programme is quite surprising.''

Brighton defended its actions Monday, saying in a statement that the club had been in discussions with Poyet and his representatives for much of Sunday and that he was "well aware that his dismissal was pending.''

Brighton missed out on promotion to the Premier League by losing in the League Championship playoffs last season.
