1. Tim Howard
Goalkeeper | Club: Everton (England)
North Brunswick, N.J.
For the U.S. to have any chance of advancing out of Group G, Tim Howard will have to have a sensational tournament. It helps that, at age 35, he is enjoying some of the best form of his career both at Everton and with the national team. Howard’s vocal leadership and impressive shot-stopping ability will both be needed to command and reinforce an inexperience defense against top opposition.
OUTLOOK: Shout, save, distribute, repeat. Howard might receive a better workout than some field players during games this summer, and he will need every bit of his experience and ability to give the U.S. a chance to get out of the group. Expect to see a lot of Howard yelling at defenders and organizing the team in front of him, which he hopes will lead to very little of him picking the ball out of the goal.
