Portugal left back Fábio Coentrão out for remainder of World Cup

News has gone from bad to worse for Portugal. After a 4-0 loss to Germany in its World Cup opener, one in which Pepe was sent off for a red card, Portugal learned that starting left back Fábio Coentrão will be missing the remainder of the World Cup due to a thigh injury.

According to a statement from the Portuguese Federation (FPF), Coentrão suffered a "second grade tear of the adductor longus muscle in the right thigh." Coentrão suffered the injury during Portugal's loss. This is a devastating blow to the Portuguese side, as it needs to find a way to emerge from the cellar of Group G with matches against the United States and Ghana remaining. Portugal plays the USA next at Arena Amazonia in Manaus on Sunday.

Coentrao and Pepe might not be the only absences. Forward Hugo Almeida (grade one hamstring tear), who was subbed off after 28 minutes against Germany, and goalkeeper Rui Patricio (grade one thigh tear) are also facing fitness battles in the coming days.
