England left back Luke Shaw signs with Manchester United

Fresh off the heels of a stellar season with Southampton but being part of England's disappointing World Cup run, 18-year-old left back Luke Shaw, who became the youngest player to take the field in this year's World Cup, has signed a four-year deal with Manchester United. The deal includes an option for an additional year.

Shaw joins Manchester United after 67 appearances since 2012 with Southampton. The club announced the move on Friday afternoon.

"I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United. I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me. I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that. I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club," Shaw said in the team's statement.

Shaw comes to Old Trafford on a reported deal in the neighborhood of £30 that makes him the fourth-highest-paid defender in the world. Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs is excited to have Shaw on board and to watch the teenager continue to develop as his career progresses. 

"Luke is a very talented young leftback with great potential," Giggs added. "He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player. I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player and eventually fulfill that promise."
