Two Dutch players refused first penalty in semifinal loss to Argentina

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal said two of his players declined to take the first penalty in their World Cup semifinal shootout loss to Argentina on Wednesday.  

Defender Ron Vlaar missed the Netherland's first attempt and Wesley Sneijder also did not score during the shootout, while Argentina scored on all four of their shootout attempts. 

Van Gaal also said he taught Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who played for him at AZ Alkmaar, how to stop penalties.

"I asked two players to take the first ball before ending up with Vlaar," said van Gaal said, via BBC.com. "I thought he was the best player on the pitch so should have confidence. It's a very humiliating question to be asked who the players were."

Van Gaal, who will take over Manchester United next week, did not identify the players who refused the penalty.

Netherlands faces Brazil in Saturday's third-place game.
