Jorge Luis Pinto will not return as Costa Rica's head coach after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract, the Costa Rican Federation announced Thursday.

Costa Rica made a remarkable run to the quarterfinals of the World Cup after surprisingly winning a Group D including former champions England, Uruguay and Italy. Costa Rica ousted Greece in penalty kicks in the round of 16 and then fell to the Netherlands in the same manner in the quarterfinals, breaking new ground for a program that had only reached the knockout stage of the World Cup one other time, in 1990.

Pinto, a 61-year-old Colombian, has been linked to the Peru national team coaching job, but no resolution about his future has been announced. This had been his second stint with the Costa Rica national team, one that lasted two years and nine months. He was previously ousted as manager after a stint in 2004-2005.

No successor has been named.
