Karim Benzema, Real Madrid agree to contract extension

Real Madrid has signed striker Karim Benzema to a five-year contract extension, the Spanish club announced Wednesday.

The extension will keep Benzema in Madrid through 2019. Benzema joined Real Madrid from French club Lyon in summer 2009.

Benzema, 26, has scored 111 goals over 235 matches with the Whites, including 17 goals (plus nine assists) in 2013-14 La Liga competition.

Benzema has tallied 22 goals in 71 appearances for the French national team, including three goals for Les Bleus at the 2014 World Cup.

This summer, Real Madrid signed Colombian striker James Rodriguez and German midfielder Toni Kroos.

The club was also rumored to be interested in Monaco striker Radamel Falcao. 

In May, Real Madrid won the Champions League for the 10th time.
