Forward Jozy Altidore will captain the U.S. men's national team when it plays the Czech Republic in a friendly in Prague on Wednesday, USA manager Jurgen Klinsmann told reporters.

Regular captain Clint Dempsey was not called up for the friendly, and typical back-up captain Tim Howard is taking a sabbatical from international play. Altidore, who has 71 appearances for the USA, is the most experienced player on the current roster. The next closest is Alejandro Bedoya, who has 32 caps.

The U.S. is 0-3-0 all time against the Czech Republic, which collected its most recent victories over the Americans at the 2006 World Cup and in the send-off series ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Altidore currently plays for Sunderland in the Premier League, his second season with the Black Cats. He has returned to action for his club after injuring his hamstring in the opening 21 minutes of this past summer’s World Cup.
