Brazilian and Bastia striker Brandão was sentenced to one month in prison and fined €20,000 ($24,983.40) fine for head-butting Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Thiago Motta, The Guardian reports.

Brandão head-butted Motta after a 2-0 victory over Bastia on Aug. 16. The incident left Motta with a broken nose, and the Ligue de Football Professionnel banned Brandão for six months because of the incident. He will be eligible to play again on Feb. 22, 2015.

Brandão admitted to head-butting Motta, but said it was not premeditated.

According to the report, prosecutors wanted Brandão to receive an eight-month suspended sentence but the court chose a custodial sentence.

Brandão’s lawyer, Olivier Martin, won't appeal the court's decision on the condition that his sentence will be commuted to community service.

“It is extremely harsh. We used to say that footballers are not above the law but they should not be below the law either,” Martin told BFMTV.
