Atletico Madrid takes Copa del Rey edge over rival Real in Torres' return

MADRID (AP) — Fernando Torres got his first win with Atletico Madrid over city rival Real Madrid on Wednesday, when the striker returned to his boyhood club in an impressive 2-0 victory in the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid's tactical flexibility allows for success in multiple ways

Midfielder Raul Garcia converted a 57th minute penalty in the first leg match of the Copa's last 16, before Jose Gimenez headed Atletico's second goal in the 76th. Torres went off in the 59th to applause at Vicente Calderon Stadium, four minutes before Madrid sent on Cristiano Ronaldo to try and spark a comeback.

Torres returned to Atletico on loan from AC Milan during the winter transfer window. He never beat Real Madrid in nine games in his first stint with Atletico.

After finishing 2014 with a Spanish record 22-win streak, Real Madrid has lost two straight games.
