Fullbacks’ main contributions to the attack usually involve overlapping runs and crosses into the penalty area, which can be a thankless and repetitive task. However, Klingenberg’s best moments in a U.S. shirt so far were anything but monotonous. After scoring a rocket from distance in World Cup qualifying against Haiti, she proved it was no fluke by doing it again six months later in a friendly against New Zealand.

Klingenberg seems to have the left back position locked down, and the World Cup will be her first major tournament with the U.S. after being named an alternate for the 2012 Summer Olympics. She played 69 minutes in the 2014 UEFA Women’s Champions League final with Tyresö—she signed with the successful Swedish club in 2012—before joining the Houston Dash in the NWSL.
