MLS: Sporting KC ties LA Galaxy, Timbers down Toronto FC

On Sunday, Sporting Kansas City tied with the LA Galaxy and the Portland Timbers defeated Toronto FC

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Giovani dos Santos scored to help the Los Angeles Galaxy tie Sporting Kansas City 1-1 and extend its unbeaten streak to six games Sunday night.

Dos Santos slipped behind the Sporting defense on the counterattack and chipped the ball, high over the head of hard-charging goalkeeper Tim Melia in the 42nd minute. It was the Galaxy's only shot on goal in the first half.

Ashley Cole received two yellow cards in a minute, leaving Los Angeles a man down from the 70th minute on.

Brad Davis scored for Kansas City in the 30 minute. He cut back to evade a pair of Los Angeles defenders and a blasted a left-footer, past a diving Brian Rowe, into the upper-left corner off a header from Gram Zusi.

Sporting KC (4-4-2), which outshot Los Angeles 17-4 and nearly doubled the Galaxy in time of possession, is winless in its last five matches.

Dos Santos has four goals and two assists in his last three games.

The Galaxy (4-1-3) leads MLS with 18 goals.

PORTLAND TIMBERS 2, TORONTO FC 1

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Diego Valeri scored on a free kick in the 74th minute to give the Portland Timbers a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC on Sunday.

The winning goal, which gave Portland a three-match undefeated streak and snapped Toronto's three-game run without a loss, came on Valeri's birthday.

Portland took the early lead with a goal on in the 17th minute on a nice series from Darren Mattocks to Valeri and then to Fanendo Adi in the middle of the box for the goal. It was Adi's seventh goal of the season, tying him with San Jose's San Jose's Chris Wondolowski for the league lead.

Former Timbers player Will Johnson scored for Toronto in the 40th minute, rushing in on a loose ball and beating diving Portland goal keeper Jake Gleeson.

The match capped an eight-game trip for Toronto FC to open the season while BMO Field is renovated. The Reds went (3-3-2) over that span.
