Manchester United's Jose Mourinho era got off to a winning start in the Community Shield, and the Red Devils carried that momentum into the Premier League season, which began for them with a 3-1 win at Bournemouth.

With Paul Pogba out suspended while he serves a one-game ban that carried over to England from Coppa Italia, Mourinho didn't have his full-strength squad just yet, and while United struggled some in the early going, it took the lead into halftime through Juan Mata and added on in the second half through Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Mata opened the scoring by pouncing on a poor back pass and taking advantage of more Bournemouth defensive miscommunication, tapping home 40 minutes in to give United a 1-0 lead.

Rooney doubled the advantage just before the hour mark, popping up in the right place for Anthony Martial's mis-hit volley. The scuffed attempt went right to Rooney, who did well to head down the spinning ball and tuck it inside the far post to make it 2-0.

Moments later it was Ibrahimovic, who made it 3-0. The scorer of the Community Shield-winning goal, Ibrahimovic laced a low shot from 25 yards into the far corner, just after he had been denied by Artur Boruc on a sensational save from his free kick. The goal added to his impressive list of debut scores in various leagues and competitions.

Adam Smith pulled one back for Bournemouth in the 69th minute after a well-worked move and a left-footed attempt from about 12 yards out, but it was of little consolation, with the result already well in hand.

Manchester United faces Southampton in its home opener on Friday, which should set up to be Pogba's first appearance since returning after four years at Juventus.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, goes to West Ham next Sunday.
