El Salvador players share recording of man offering money to fix match

The players were offered $30 per minute for a win, $20 per minute for a tie, and $15 per minute for a 1-0 loss to Canada.

El Salvador players played a recording of a man offering them money to fix their World Cup qualifying match against Canada, saying Ricardo Padilla, a former club president, offered bribes in exchange for varied results.

According to the players, Padilla was at the team's hotel in San Salvador on Saturday and asked to speak with the players. He then offered $30 per minute for a win, $20 per minute for a tie, and $15 per minute for a 1-0 loss in the match.

Padilla didn't deny the allegations, reportedly saying he wasn't asking the players to throw the game and telling Salvadoran paper La Presna Grafica, "Let them investigate, I’m not worried. Those who want to see it as something bad can see it that way and those who want to see it as something good then they can too."

The development comes three years after 14 Salvadoran officials were banned for life over match-fixing.

Canada and El Salvador are set to play at 10 p.m. ET in Vancouver.

El Salvador has already been eliminated from reaching the final round, while Canada still has hope of going through but needs plenty of help from Mexico in its match vs. Honduras.
