Watch: Oblak makes incredible triple save for Atletico Madrid in ousting Leverkusen
Atletico Madrid is headed back to the quarterfinals of the Champions League after a 0-0 draw vs. Bayer Leverkusen–capped by heroics from goalkeeper Jan Oblak–put the finishing touches on a 4-2 aggregate triumph.
Following an explosive first-leg triumph in Germany, Atletico needed to essentially avoid catastrophe at the Vicente Calderon against a side adjusting to a new manager after Roger Schmidt was shown the door. Goals away from home from Saul Niguez, Antoine Griezmann, Kevin Gameiro and Fernando Torres had Atletico poised to go through, and that's exactly what transpired.
Atletico nearly added to its lead in the first half, as Angel Correa and Koke both came close only to be denied sensationally by Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Chicharito buzzed a shot over the bar for Leverkusen, but a scoreless first half ensued, suiting Atletico Madrid just fine.
Leno's counterpart, Oblak, was not to be outdone, turning in a triple save with about 25 minutes to go, which was followed by Griezmann whizzing a shot by the woodwork.
Atletico Madrid becomes the third Spanish team to reach the quarterfinals, joining fellow regulars Barcelona and Real Madrid.
