Watch: Bakayoko answers Sane, sends Monaco through in Champions League
Monaco and Manchester City put on another dazzling Champions League show, but it was the Ligue 1 side that came out on top by two goals this time, with Tiemoue Bakayoko's late header the goal that sent Monaco through to the quarterfinals via away goals after a 6-6 aggregate draw.
When Manchester City and Monaco last met, they combined for a Champions League match for the ages, with City holding on for a 5-3 win in the first leg of the round of 16. Wednesday, Monaco erased Manchester City's advantage in 30 minutes, saw Leroy Sane snag it back in the second half, only to have Bakayoko emerge as the hero six minutes later at the Stade Louis II.
Monaco came out on fire early on. Kylian Mbappe was denied by Willy Caballero from close range, with his clear look from inside the box in the seventh minute turned away, but he wasn't denied on his next chance. From the doorstep off a cross from Bernardo Silva, the 18-year-old Mbappe brought Monaco within 5-4 on aggregate in the eight minute.
Monaco pulled even (but ahead via away goals) in the 29th minute through Fabihno. Benjamin Mendy sent in a perfect cross from the left, and Fabinho was there to one-time it home.
Manchester City gained a stronger hold on the match as the second half progressed, and it had a golden opportunity to go ahead in the 65th minute. Danijel Subasic denied Aguero from 10 yards out, though, with a sliding effort, keeping Monaco ahead in the series.
That is, temporarily.
Sane finished into an empty net after pouncing on a rebound from Raheem Sterling's saved shot, restoring Manchester City's lead on a 6-5 aggregate with 20 minutes to go.
An equalizer at that stage would put Monaco back in the driver's seat via the tiebreaker, though, and that's exactly what came in the 77th minute. Bakayoko headed home Thomas Lemar's lengthy free kick, bringing the aggregate back to 6-6 and giving Monaco all it needed to go through.
The loss eliminates Pep Guardiola's side from the competition, and leaves the Premier League with one side remaining among the final eight: Leicester City.
