Reading are eyeing up a possible move for Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow as they seek out promotion to the Premier League.

Current Reading number one Ali Al-Habsi was voted as the Royals' Player of the Season last year, but according to the Chronicle Live, Reading boss Jaap Stam rates Darlow as a better keeper and will attempt to bring him to the Madejski Stadium this summer.

Darlow is currently one of four goalkeepers at Newcastle fighting for the number one spot with Rob Elliott, Tim Krul and Freddie Woodman all looking to impress manager Rafael Benitez this summer in order to get a regular place in the side.

However, recent reports suggest that Benitez is looking for a new goalkeeper to bring to the club and that could mean an exit for Darlow as he lost his place in the side to Elliot for the final three games of the season - the Magpies have been linked with England's number one Joe Hart, former Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina and also Greece international Orestis Karnezis.

Reading suffered play-off final heartbreak at the end of last season when they lost on penalties to Huddersfield Town - boss Jaap Stam has recently agreed a new two-year deal and will look to push for promotion to the Premier League, but to do this will need a strong spine through the team and a new keeper is high on his list of priorities.

Reading are reportedly ready to make a £5m offer for the 26-year-old in the hopes that Newcastle accept and allow Darlow to leave the club.
