The winner of the two-legged tie will advance to the group stage of the Champions League. 

Liverpool reached the playoff round by finishing fourth in the English Premier League, narrowly clinching the spot over surging Arsenal on the final day of the 2016-17 season. Hoffenheim finished fourth in Bundesliga by a wide margin, though the club missed out on an automatic group–stage qualifying spot by just two points. 

The Reds are aiming to reach their first Champions League group stage since 2014-15.
